Meet Coach Morton!

Interview Part 1

Interview Part 2

Q: Where are you from?

A: “Apex. Right down the road from here.”

Q: Are you married, or do you have any kids?

A: “I am married, and my wife teaches at Athens Drive. No kids, we have a four legged, a little dog. That’s our kid.”

Q:What were you doing before you were at Apex?

A: “I was in Georgia teaching in a high school, defensive coordinator, athletic director and head wrestling coach.”

Q:How do you like Apex so far?

A: “I love it. I graduated from here in ‘91; I’ve taught here a couple times, and I love Apex. That’s why I came back.”

Q:What inspired you to become a teacher?

A: “I had a head coach named Joe Brodner who was my mentor and who was our head football coach when I was at Apex High in the ‘80s, and he’s the one who really inspired me on wanting to be a teacher and give back to kids and young people.”

Q:Do you have any secondary jobs besides teaching?

A: “I’m a personal trainer sometimes during the off-season.”

Q:What are some hobbies of yours?

A: “I like working out. My wife and I also do a lot of outdoor activities…going kayaking, hiking and just being outdoors.”

Q:If you weren’t a teacher what job would you pursue?

A: “I guess a personal training type job. Just working with people is what I really enjoy, especially young people. When I was growing up, I worked at the YMCA and really enjoyed that… coached recreational football when I was in high school, so it’s all about dealing with young people.”

Q:What do your students think of you?

A: “Well… some days they don’t mind me; some days they do. I think they respect me… I try to give them respect when we do things, especially in the weight room. When I’m teaching weight training, I tell them what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. I’m in there for their best interests, and I’m trying to get them to be a better athlete so they usually see eye to eye with me.”

Q: What advice would you give your students to set them up for success?

A: “Just work hard and listen to others. People are going to give you great advice so sometimes you got to listen to them, and just have an open mind. Just because what you think you want to do, doesn’t mean that’s what you’re going to do. Some people go to college and have a degree and they don’t even do that degree. So just be open and find a job that you like to go to everyday; that’s why I’m back at Apex because I enjoy being back at Apex to be around everyday, and I have a smile on my face every morning.”
