Death, the only inevitable factor in life, the most common and most unknown presence, and the leading cause of grief worldwide, has taken many musician’s lives. This article will be a very small tribute to some of pop’s greatest artists whom the music world has lost this year.
Tom Petty is one of the greatest selling artists of all time and sold roughly thirty-four million copies, in total worth around eighty-million dollars. Petty is most known for being the frontman of “Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers,” a 1970’s rock band that has been putting out albums up until 2014. Petty died October 2, 2017, at UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, CA. After being found in his apartment not breathing having suffered from cardiac arrest, he died at 8:40 PM that evening at the age of sixty-seven. The news of Petty’s death was public by the next day, and the world was taken aback due to Petty not having public health issues. Petty had a long lasting influence on modern rock bands and had many hits that were adored by fans, including the famous song “Free Falling.”
Chester Bennington, the lead vocalist for nu metal band Linkin Park, was one of the greatest influences on the emo and nu metal scene due to his harsh vocals and emotional writing. Bennington died on July 20, 2017, in Palos Verdes Estates, CA, at the young age of forty-one. His death was ruled a suicide by hanging. All throughout his life, Bennington suffered from numerous bouts of depression as well as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to childhood trauma. To deal with his issues, Bennington would write music and eventually started the band Linkin Park. After the release of their debut album “Hybrid Theory” the band immediately blew up with very popular song such as “One Step Closer” and “Crawling.” Linkin Park paved the way for emo and nu metal music and has thousands of fans saying that Linkin Park’s music helped them through rough times, and even in some cases, saved their lives.
Chris Cornell, a man who is considered by many to be one of the greatest rock singers of all time. Cornell was a lead vocalist for rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, as well as doing three solo albums. Soundgarden has been credited with one of the drivers of the grunge movement, the starting point for many different types of your favorite rock genres including alternative rock, and even heavy metal. Cornell died on May 18, 2017 in Detroit, MI, after hanging himself in his apartment. His death was suspected to be related to an imbalance in his anti-depressant prescription but has not been confirmed.
These artists have changed and created genres of music that we love and adore to this day. Many high schoolers of the modern day have probably heard some of these artist’s music but did not know the name of their songs. Take a second to listen to your music, particularly any form of rock or metal, and realize that none of this would be possible without these great musicians and their influence.
