Coaching Powderpuff at Apex

A newer tradition in the Peak is the annual powderpuff game, a fun flag football event that takes place now every spring before the spring football game. The sophomores and seniors take on the freshmen and juniors led by football players in the same classes at the helm for both teams. In the past two games the seniors and sophomores have emerged victorious.

There are about five football players selected by the great Coach Mo to lead these girls to hopeful victory. There are techniques used to relay the system wanted by the coaches to their players. With time not really on their side, it is hard for the coaches to install a lot. There are two hour-long practices leading up to the game. I talked to and observed how the coaches handled this challenge of preparation.

The senior coaches this year definitely had a more complex and interesting style of coaching that in the end brought them the edge over their adversaries. Grant Harris had his school Chromebook in game and practice with plays drawn up for his feminine fighters. The seniors had a gameplan around girls that they made into superstars and seemed to know beforehand what they were getting players wise. The seniors and sophomores had many of the girls flag football team roster, which surely gave them an advantage. The coaches for the elder squad also seemed a lot more comfortable around their roster and definitely showed it, with yelling and other styles of coaching.

On the other side for the younger foes, the juniors and freshmen seemed completely unprepared, and it showed on gameday. The coaches took a completely opposite style compared to the seniors and did not put in many plays at all. To sum up the comparison, the seniors and sophomores were practicing football while their opposition was playing games.

Gameday did arrive, and like last year, it was kept close due to non-players in the form of the officials. Whether that made the difference or not the seniors and sophomores won for the second year in a row on a Makenzie O’Neil touchdown made possible by an untimed down given after a pass interference call with no time remaining.

If you didn’t participate or watch this year’s game, be sure to check it out next year!
