Bright Futures Symposium

The Apex High PTSA is hosting a symposium on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. , to help students in all grades, and their parents, determine what comes next after their four years at AHS. The symposium will have a little bit of everything to meet the needs of all AHS students.

The symposium will start with Ms. Hofmann sharing information about resources available at Apex High School. Then, participants can choose their first breakout session on a topic of interest. After that forty-minute session, students and parents can select a second breakout session. Each session is forty minutes long and includes time to ask questions. Students and parents can also split up in order to gather more information from the various sessions.

For the students who think they will be college-bound after AHS, there are sessions on simplifying college planning, ten things not to do when writing  the college essay, information on transfer programs available at Wake Tech as well as information about SAT and ACT testing. Students who need help with paying for college may want to hear about the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) or learn ten key ways to make college affordable. Also, for the Spanish-speaking community at AHS, there are two sessions on getting ready for college that will be presented entirely in Spanish.

For those thinking more of careers or employment  after AHS, there will be a session on workforce continuing education available through Wake Tech with information about associate degrees, diplomas, and certificate programs. In addition, there will be a session pertaining to the North Carolina Triangle Apprenticeship Program (NCTAP) and a session exploring military opportunities with an emphasis on the U.S. Navy.

Some students have learning challenges and will need assistance when attending universities. For students with those concerns, there will be a session with an admissions counselor from Campbell University with some good tips on things to consider when looking at the various school options and resources available. In addition, for families looking for resources as their students with unique requirements become young adults and transition to adulthood, the WorkTogetherNC research coordinator will be on hand to give them valuable information.

This symposium is definitely a program that has it all. It is a first for AHS but hopefully one that becomes  an annual event and benefits  many more AHS students and families.
