Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Since the year 1949, this has been a staple event in many calendars. Mental health is something that is very significant in our lives as it affects not only our well being but also our overall quality of life. It includes our thoughts, emotions, and social well-being, and it influences how we think, feel, and act. Mental health allows us to experience and manage all types of different emotions.

48.3 Million adults struggle with mental health issues on a daily basis, but only a small portion of them get the treatment that they need. 10% of adults struggle with serious mental health issues after being diagnosed. Adults are not the only ones who can struggle with their mental health, adolescents and teenagers are on the rise as well. Every one  in five  children between the ages of eight  and twelve battle with mental health, and only 50% get the treatment that’s recommended.

Some of the factors that mental health issues come from is adverse childhood experiences, trauma, chronic stress, and social isolation. If you are struggling with your mental health, some coping mechanisms that I would recommend is surrounding yourself with people who love you unconditionally and finding inclusive and supportive environments in your common places, like workplaces, schools, and communities.

Mental health influences every part of our lives. By recognizing the importance of mental well-being and addressing the factors that influence it, we can create a society where people can thrive and fulfill their potential. Through education, and awareness, we can build a future where mental health is valued, supported, and prioritized.
