Five Black Inventors who changed the world of Technology

African-American inventors have made a significant contribution to technology, ranging from light bulb components to mobile refrigeration. Let’s take a deeper look at five of the inventors who changed the world of technology:

  1. Lewis Latimer was an African-American inventor and patent draftsman who developed the carbon filament used in light bulbs, Latimer’s creation helped make light bulbs more accessible and affordable for everyone.
  1. Madam C.J Walker was an African-American entrepreneur and philanthropist who developed a line of hair care products that were specifically designed for African- Americans. 
  1. Patricia Bath was an ophthalmologist and inventor who invented the “Laserphaco Probe”.​​ This device revolutionized the world of ophthalmology and was used in cataract surgeries to make them safer and more successful.
  1. Marie Van Britton Brown was an African-American nurse and inventor who, along with her husband, invented the first ever home security system. Her invention has greatly contributed to keeping homes safe.
  1. Frederick Mckinney Jones was an African-American inventor, engineer, and entrepreneur who invented the first portable air-cooling unit for trucks that carry perishable goods. Mckinney’s invention not only helped to keep food fresh during long- distance deliveries but also had a massive impact on the medical industry by being able to safely transport medicine and blood during the war.

All of these inventors are not only a big part of Black history but a big part of American history as a whole. These individuals have shaped our modern world for the better, and their inventions are still used to this day.
