Graduating 2024?
As we reach the midst of college application season, many seniors are pondering the changes they’ll face. It’s the beginning of young adulthood, and many students are going to be living on their own for the first time in their lives. Here are some things to consider if you’re a rising college freshman.
Living on your own requires you to consider needs you might not have considered in the past. You may be living in either a dorm or an apartment. Either way, you’ll need to invest in some household items. The first area you’ll need to consider is your kitchen or eating area. Think about items like dishes, soap, and a place to store your food. Another area is your personal care. You’ll need to think about simple things like shampoo, toothpaste, and toilet paper. Other areas you’re going to need to consider are your closet, furniture, and school supplies. It’s helpful to start a list and budget for what you’ll need now, so when you go off on your own, you’re prepared.
Many seniors are planning to go off to college after high school. It’s important to recognize that school is going to be very different academically. You’ll need to find a space where you feel comfortable and focused. It’s especially important that you make a routine for yourself. Having some consistency when studying will help you to focus better. Finding small things like background music and supplies that you like subconsciously helps you become more invested.
The biggest thing you’ll have to do is become independent and self aware. You’ll be responsible for yourself and maintaining your own wellbeing for the first time in your life. This can be scary, and you might be clueless on what to do. Try reaching out to people who’ve been down the path you plan on going down. They might have some advice on how to be successful or examples of what not to do. There are some tools that may help you stay more focused and organized are keeping a calendar and planning apps. Making time for yourself is also important for your mental and physical health. The key to success will be balancing and organizing your time.
Graduating is a big change for young adults. You’re catapulting into the most important part of your life. Good luck to all of the seniors; you’ve got this!
