During the fall, on most Fridays, Apex High School has a football game. Whether it is at home or away, the energy is always present. But what makes the games so exciting and exhilarating? I sent out a Google Form to some Apex students asking them if they attended Apex football games or other sporting events. The responses were interesting. 

Many students try to attend at least the home games for football. I also asked students why they enjoy Apex football games. The reasons varied. For some people, football games are a chance to talk to some of their school friends and get to know them better without being restricted to a classroom setting. But students can also talk to people they have never met before and make new friends. In one of the responses, a student said that football games were “fun and it gives people a chance to meet new friends and socialize while not having to do school work”.  Another student said their favorite part was “spending time with friends and the environment at the game”. 

In addition to time with friends, other students enjoy the food and the entertainment. One student said this about their favorite part of the football games: “They offer good concessions, and the announcer is entertaining”.

There are also some people who have never attended a game. One student said, “I have actually never been to a game at Apex, but I really want to. I think that it would be fun to hangout with friends and see people that I don’t normally get to see outside of a classroom setting. It will also be fun to cheer on our team.” This response should encourage everyone who wants to attend a game but has not done so yet, the comfort in knowing they are not alone. 

In the Google Form, another question was “Do you try to attend other Apex sporting events?” Seventy-five percent of students said no, and the other twenty-five percent said yes. When asked what other sports students are seeing, the responses were baseball, softball, lacrosse, volleyball, soccer, and swim meets. The same exciting energy at Apex football games is also present at these other sporting events. When asked what is enjoyable about other sporting events students said: “meeting new people and being able to support our fellow Cougars in something they are playing”, “to be able to enjoy being there with the other students that you may have not met before”, and “the community and how good the teams are”. Football is the most popular, and it seems many students overlook other sporting events. But these responses show that the other sporting events can have the same energy, fun, and social aspect as the football games.
