The 2023 Academy Awards

On Sunday, March 12, the 95th Academy Awards, or Oscars, were held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. This star-studded event, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, was a lively celebration of the talented actors and actresses that Hollywood has to offer.
Though there were many films nominated by the Academy, the most highly awarded film of the night was Everything Everywhere All At Once. This film won seven Oscars out of eleven nominations, including Best Actor and Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Director, Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. The studio that produced Everything Everywhere All At Once, A24 Films also produced the film The Whale, which won Best Actor in a Leading Role. This put A24 Films on the map as the first studio to collect all six major awards (Best Actor and Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor and Actress in a supporting role, Best Picture and Best Director) in one night. The studio also won three other awards, making a total of nine awards won out of their eighteen nominations.
A24 Films winning the six major awards was not the only history made this year at the Oscars. The award for Best Original Song went to “Naatu Naatu” from the film RRR; it is the first song from an Indian film to win this award and the first non-Engilsh song to win since 2009. This is also the first year that multiple Asian actors have won an Oscar in the same year. Ruth E. Carter, who won Best Costume Design for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is the first black woman to ever win two Oscars.
The award for Best Actress in a Leading Role went to Michelle Yeoh for her role as Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All At Once. This is the first Oscar that she has won, and she is the first Asian woman to win Best Actress. Jamie Lee Curtis won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. She won for her role as Deirdre Beaubeirdre, also from Everything Everywhere All At Once. This is also her first Oscar; both of her parents had been nominated for Oscars in the past as well, so she has followed in her family’s footsteps.
The winners of the awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actor in a Supporting Role also broke records this year. The Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role went to Brendan Fraser for his role as Charlie in The Whale. Fraser is the first Canadian to win Best Actor and this is his first Oscar win and nomination. Ke Huy Quan is also a first time Oscar nominee and winner. He won Best Actor in a Supporting Role and is the first Vietnamese born actor to win an acting Oscar. Both actors have worked together before in the movie Encino Man. They also were both more popular when they were younger and took fairly long breaks from acting for personal reasons before getting back into it in recent years.
The awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay also went to Everything Everywhere All At Once. The directors of the film, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, also known as “The Daniels” are the first non-related directing duo to win the Best Director award in forty-five years; they are also only the third ever non-related duo to win the award in its history. Not only did they direct the film, but they also co-wrote and co-produced it. This makes them the second ever duo to share all three awards: best directing, screenplay, and film. Daniel Kwan is also the first writer of Chinese descent to win the award for Best Original Screenplay. Everything Everywhere All At Once is also the first film to win three acting awards in fifty years.
That night, there were many awards given to many deserving people, and much history was made in the process. Everything Everywhere All At Once was the most awarded film of the night, but there were many other deserving winners and nominees who were also recognized. Though the Oscars are over this year, who knows what the Academy will choose to nominate for next year’s ceremony; only time will tell.
