The Return of Early Release Days

This school year, six early release days have been added to WCPSS school calendars. They come as a way to allow K-5 teachers to complete training for a new way of teaching reading. For teachers at Apex High School, the early release days will be an opportunity to participate in staff meetings and meet with their Professional Learning Community (PLC) teams.

Students have a resounding positive opinion on the new early release days.

Shreya Senthilkumar, a senior, says:  “I love early release days because school gets really draining, and it is nice to have time to go home, relax and catch up on work.”

Senior Maria Prasalova agrees. “I love early release days because I get more free time in the afternoon, and I can get my homework and after school activities done faster.”

Staff members have similar opinions about early release days.

Mr. Tullis, FBLA Advisor, explains, “Early release days give us all an opportunity to refresh and [re]gain our thought processes and be productive.”

English teacher Mr. Baker added on a more humorous note, “It’s nice because the students are usually really excited, but I don’t get to go home quite as early, so it feels less like an early release for me.”

The remaining early release dates for traditional calendar schools, including Apex High School, are as follows:

  • Thursday, November 10, 2022
  • Monday, December 5, 2022
  • Wednesday, December 21, 2022
  • Friday, March 24, 2023
  • Tuesday, May 9, 2023

Hopefully, the early release days this year will allow time for our staff and students to recharge and enjoy a much-needed break.
