Baseball/Softball: Season Update

Spring sports are officially underway at Apex High School, meaning baseball and softball are in full swing…literally. Both teams are about halfway through their seasons. Varsity Baseball has played 14 games so far this season, winning nine. Varsity Softball has played 13 games, and have won an impressive 11; the Lady Cougars are third in their Southwest Wake 4a League.

Apex Varsity Softball has been on a roll this season, coached by Adam Renzi and Jessica Ricks, with eleven wins. The team has become a close-knit group and have been playing incredibly well, finding most of their wins at away games. The team gained serious momentum throughout the season, starting when they defeated their rival, Panther Creek. Since then, Varsity Softball has shut out teams including Heritage, Cary, Willow Springs, Green Level, Middle Creek, and Green Hope. Senior Abbie Gold has played Varsity Softball for all four years at Apex High. This season, she has helped contribute greatly to the team with four home runs and a strong leadership role. The Apex Varsity Softball team hopes to end the season first in their conference, and are well on their way to doing so.

Varsity Baseball, coached by Apex Alumni Lane Olive and assistant coach Neal Holmes, began their season with an impressive 8-0 win over Athens Drive. Currently 4th in the league, Apex Baseball has been performing consistently thanks to the team’s chemistry. Senior pitcher and infielder Charley Hegman stated, “We have really good team chemistry. Everyone is friends and we all hang out together outside of school.” The team has also significantly improved since last season in terms of confidence and leadership, according to Charley. As the season progresses, Varsity Baseball hopes to continue to build upon their successes so far and earn a win against Middle Creek on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:00. As far as long term goals, the team is hopeful that they’ll achieve winning their conference and making a run in the States.

Apex Varsity Baseball and Apex Varsity Softball are off to a successful start this season; both teams are giving it their all in hopes of reaching their athletic goals. As the school year comes to a close in a few weeks, we wish the best of luck to these teams in their final games and hope to see them in the playoffs soon!
