A Living Legacy

Written by Camille Gottholm and Connor Vandermark.
Most know the story of Coach Kevin Todd. A ray of sunshine that shone on all those around him, Todd will always be remembered by his colleagues, students, and players. His impact on everyone’s lives was astounding. From his words of wisdom, to his positive attitude, he would be remembered in our hearts. In order to make sure he impacted the future generations of Apex athletes, the field at the Cougar Stadium has been named Kevin E. Todd Field. On March 25th, a naming ceremony was held at halftime of the Apex High Women’s Varsity soccer game. It was attended by hundreds of people, including his sisters, five generations of Apex High School principals, Wake County staff, Mayor Jacques Gilbert, and many former players. It was a beautiful ceremony that recapped his long list of achievements during his 29-year teaching and coaching career.
The ceremony began when friends, family, and former players of Coach Todd gathered at center field during halftime. Coach Todd’s sisters Janice and Sharon were front and center. Mrs. Nobles, an English teacher at Apex High and former friend of Coach Todd, read an incredible speech to the attendees. The speech recapped not only his illustrious career, but his personal life and the love Coach Todd showed to everyone he met. In the final moments of the ceremony, Mrs. Nobles called up the 2021 Coach Todd Scholarship Recipients, Tyler Roach and Logan Styers, to unveil the new name of the field. The new name, Kevin E. Todd Field was met by a thunderous applause from everyone in attendance.
All in all, March 25, 2022 was a night to remember. Not only did the Varsity Women’s Soccer team pick up a victory, but the incredible life and legacy of Coach Kevin Todd was forever memorialized in the renaming of the field. All of his good deeds culminated in the gathering of all those who loved him. So as we continue to celebrate the life of Coach Kevin Todd, let’s remember his famous words: “Let’s make it a great day, folks.”
Camille and Conner, you have captured the moments of that evening so well. I am so glad that I met you in person last week. The ceremony was so moving and the number of people in attendance filled our hearts to overflowing. Continue in excellence in everything that you do. #peakproud #bekind
