HOMECOMING: A Week to Remember

Amber Wilson and Logan Widemond
Last week was Homecoming Week! Our Cougars showed school spirit every day, and concluded with a victorious homecoming football game!
Spirit Week
Monday’s theme was Summer vs Winter! In addition to picture day at school, students dressed up as they would in either the dog days of summer or the dead of winter. We saw everything from tropical tourists to extreme skiers!
Tuesday’s theme was Character Day! Students dressed up as their favorite fictional characters, memes, and celebrities. This was a fan favorite of students across all grade levels. Some standout costumes were Among Us crewmates and Teletubbies. Nearly every Cougar we talked to agreed that character day was their favorite, this is definitely a theme we want to see return next year!
Wednesday’s theme was Decade Day! Seniors dressed up as the 2000s, Juniors as the 90s, Sophomores as the 80s, and Freshmen as the 70s. Sarah Puertollano (‘23) and Joshika Indrakumar (‘23) commented, “Decades day was my favorite, it was out of the ordinary and so many people dressed up.” This theme was unique and a fun way to celebrate hump day!
Thursday’s theme was the illustrious Cowboys vs Aliens. This returning theme from Spirit Week 2019 was a crowd pleaser. The Apex High community took on this theme strongly again this year. Whether Cowboys or Aliens win this battle, the world may never know.
Friday’s theme was Black, Green, and Gold! Students were decked out in Apex colors on the last day of spirit week. This theme was a great way to end a festive week and get excited for the homecoming game!
Homecoming Game
Friday’s “Black, Green, and Gold” theme was also the theme for the homecoming game! The game started at 7 pm at our very own Cougar Den against Green Level. If you showed up early you may have been one of the lucky 150 people to receive a free t-shirt! Our Apex High football team showed out and took the win 42-27 with the support of Apex Cougar Crazies, parents, and staff members. When all the excitement of the game was paused at half time, Michael Bailey and Ayden Andolina were crowned Homecoming King and Queen.
Pep Rally
The Cougars were so excited to have a pep rally in person after nearly 2 years! Taking place on the football field, it featured performances from the marching band, cheerleading team, and brand-new dance company! The pep rally ended with an introduction to the 2021 Homecoming Court and speech from Head Football Coach Morton. He got everyone pumped for the game by declaring, “it’s gator season!”.
Homecoming Parade
Stretching from Apex Baptist Church to Hunter Street Skate Park, the Apex Homecoming Parade was a sight to see. Hundreds of parents and students lined up to watch, and tons of school spirit was in the air. Floats included the homecoming court, clubs, and sports teams– ranging from Key Club to Women’s Tennis. What a great way to wrap up the week and kick off the homecoming game!
