Transitioning to Plan A

As we all know, Wake County Public Schools, including Apex High School, has transitioned into Plan A recently. With that, there are many changes that have been made inside the school and classroom that are different from Plan B. The school and classrooms are filled with more students, and upperclassmen can now go off campus again for lunch. The social distancing guidelines have also changed from six feet apart down to three feet apart. With all these students and changes coming back to school, I was curious to how students and teachers feel about their safety and whether or not they wanted to come back to Plan A. I decided to ask a member of the 2021 senior class as well as  a teacher about how they feel being back at school in Plan A.

Interview With Mrs. Lasher

  1. Are you happy now that we are back to school in Plan A?
  • Yes, I thought it was really boring without the students. My favorite part of the job is interacting with students, so it was quiet and boring without you guys.
  1. Do you feel safe with the increase in students and change in social distancing guidelines?
  • I do feel safe because there still aren’t that many students here, so I don’t think we are packed in unsafely. Most of the students wear their masks correctly, which is good.
  1. Is there anything you would change about being back in Plan A?
  • I wish that there weren’t hybrid classes, but I understand that we have to have them because it is the only option for some students and teachers.
  1. Does it feel different from Plan B?
  • It does feel different because the people who are in person always have to be here now. They can’t just go online anymore if they didn’t want to come to class. This is better for planning because in Plan B, I didn’t know who was going to show up everyday.
  1. Did you want to come back full time with many students in person everyday?
  • I prefer all the students being here, but I also felt nervous thinking about having all the students back.
  1. How is it having to teach in hybrid classes everyday?
  • It’s hard because I don’t always know who to talk to. Do I talk to the kids here or the ones that are at home? It’s difficult making sure that everyone can hear me or each other through the computer. It’s also hard to make things equitable, which makes it challenging to do assignments.
  1. What do you think about the new attendance policies?
  • I think the new attendance policies are fine. I believe that if you chose to be in school, you should be in school.

Interview with Joey Rosino, Member of the 2021 Senior Class

  1. Are you happy now that we are back to school in Plan A?
  • Yes because I get to see all my friends before we all go off to college. Interacting with other people in person is more fun than online.
  1. Do you feel safe with the increase in students and change in social distancing guidelines?
  • With the extra precautions we are taking, I do feel safe at school even with almost everyone coming back.
  1. Is there anything you would change about being back in Plan A?
  • Yes, I would change the lunch time back to forty minutes or even longer because I don’t have enough time to go off campus.
  1. Does it feel different from Plan B?
  • Yes, it feels different because now I have to go to school everyday. I honestly miss the two week period of being virtual.
  1. Did you want to come back full time with many students in person everyday?
  • Yes, I honestly wanted to go back because being at home all the time got boring.
  1. How is it having to learn in hybrid classes everyday?
  • I think it is harder to learn in hybrid classes. The interactions between the online students and us in person students makes projects and learning more difficult. It’s also hard having to communicate with the virtual students as well.
  1. What do you think about the new attendance policies?
  • I feel that if you sign in to class if you can’t make it to school in person, you should still be counted present because you are still learning and doing the assignments.

For the most part it appears that people are happy to be back in Plan A. Most people feel safe and are wearing their masks correctly. Plan A isn’t perfect, but as of right now it is working well at Apex High School. Personally, I like being back and in classes with all of my friends. I feel like learning is easier in person even though the hybrid classes make it a little harder. It looks like everyone is doing their best to stay safe and to continue to go to school. Hopefully most people will be vaccinated soon, and schools can go completely back to normal.
