Apex High’s Very Own Gymnastics Team

Apex High School has had a gymnastics team for quite a while now, but many people are not aware of the team’s existence.. Actually, there isn’t just one team; there is a varsity and a JV team. The past two years the team has been relatively small, but this year it has grown to around eleven girls on the varsity team. The season has just started, and our gymnastics team is already doing very well. In their first meet, they placed fourth out of twenty-one teams!! I don’t know what exactly goes on in the gymnastics meets, so I decided to interview someone on the team to give me some insights.

Sophia O’Sullivan, Junior

Q: How long have you been doing gymnastics?

A: I have been doing gymnastics for around nine years.

Q: How long have you been on the high school team?

A: I have been on the varsity team since freshman year.

Q: What are the different events to participate in?

A: You can do bars, vault, beam, floor, or all-around, which is all the events. If you don’t participate in all the events, it is called specializing in the specific events you are in.

Q: Which event(s) do you normally participate in?

A: I do all the events except for beam; beam is not my strongest event.

Q: What is your favorite event to participate in?

A: That’s a hard decision; I really like bars and vault.

Q: How is the season going so far?

A: We are doing really well. We have only had one meet, but we placed fourth out of twenty-one teams.

Q: How is the atmosphere of the team?

A: We are very supportive of each other; no one really judges anyone either. I consider them my second family.

Q:  How is this year’s team compared to last year’s?

A: There is definitely a lot more people on the team this year; the freshmen are very talented. We have also become much closer this year as a team.

Q: How do you think the gymnastics team will do this year?

A: Definitely better than last year because of how many more people are on the team. I think if we work really hard, then we can make it in the top three places at Conference.

Even though they are pretty unknown, this year’s gymnastics team is looking to have a great season. They have meets almost every Saturday at either Raleigh School of Gymnastics, Team Attraction, or Tri-County. Come out and show your Cougar support by going to one of the meets!!
