If you didn’t know, one of the kickers for the Apex High School football team is Hayden Tarpey! I interviewed her to find out more about what it’s like for her being on the team.

 

1.What persuaded you to try out to be the kicker?

I played football from first grade through middle school and was not able to play these past few years due to a lack of time. I decided to try out this year since it’s my senior year and could be the last chance I have to play football. I just wanted to go for it.

2. Do you wish you had tried to play on the team in your previous years?

If I had the time, I would’ve played in my previous years. I really enjoy doing it now. The team and the coaches are amazing, and it is really fun.

3. What do you like most about being on the team?

I really like the atmosphere. When I first joined the team, everyone was so welcoming. I have heard that some high schools don’t allow girls on the team, so I’m glad I have the opportunity to be a part of such an accepting team. I love all of the players and coaches, too. Every week there is a new kick that I try to learn and master by the end of the week, and that is really fun for me.

4. What do you like least about being on the team?

I don’t really have anything that I don’t like. It’s all super fun.

5. What was your reaction when you found out you made the team?

I was very excited and a little bit nervous. After a couple of days, I got the hang of things, and it was all fine. Overall I was very happy.

6. Do you feel like there is a lot of pressure on you to do well?

I think there’s a lot of pressure on everybody to do well. One of our team sayings is “All in”, meaning you should be all in for everybody. If you don’t do your job, you aren’t on the team for the right reasons. You need to do what you are supposed to in order to help the team succeed. The pressure on one specific person can sometimes be lessened because you’re so determined to accomplish anything for your team. Each person is determined to be their best for their teammates. 

7. Do you plan on playing any other sports this year?

Yes! I plan on playing basketball in the winter and soccer in the spring.

8. How do you like the football team in comparison to the other sports teams you’ve been on?

Each team is unique and has different aspects that I like, but I honestly like all of them equally. I can’t choose one that I like more than others.
