AHS Wrestling Update

The Apex High School wrestling team is about halfway through their season and is striving for success and improvement. It has been difficult for Apex to win as a team due to the fact that there are not many members compared to other schools’ teams. However, wrestling is both a team and individual sport, and individually, our Cougars are performing very well– dominating many of their matches. When it comes to winter sports though, wrestling is often overlooked, and many people don’t know much about it. Below is an interview with junior Zack Froning, a member of our AHS wrestling team. Read it to learn more about wrestling itself and what it’s like to be a part of the Apex team!

Q: How many hours a week do you practice?

A: Fifteen hours.

Q: How often do you compete?

A: Usually twice a week.

Q: What’s your favorite part of being on the wrestling team?

A: The feeling just after pinning a kid.

Q: What are some goals the team has this season?

A: We can’t really do well as a team because we have so few people, but individually, a lot of us are hoping to get to states.

Q: What makes wrestling fun or rewarding for you?

A: You get to impose your will on another person, so it’s kind of fun. Also throwing people is fun because they go weightless for a second.

Q: How has the team been doing so far this season?

A: Individually, not too bad, but as a team we don’t have enough people.

Q: What is something you want people to know about wrestling and being a part of the AHS team?

A: The singlets aren’t as weird as they seem!

The season will be wrapping up in February with Regionals scheduled for Feb. 8 and 9 at Cardinal Gibbons High School. Apex is determined to pull out top performances at that meet in order to qualify for States. You got it Cougars!
