Winter Sports Update: Women’s Basketball

Winter sports are in full swing, and the Apex Women’s basketball team has been in action since November. After a slow start, the Cougars are starting to get rolling, and it will be exciting to watch their progress throughout the season.

The Cougars began their season 0-5, but have begun to find their stride winning their last two games against Broughton and Garner. Their losses have come against formidable opponents some of those including Green Hope, Panther Creek, Durham Jordan, and Leesville.

The team attributed the tough start a large number of turnovers.

Senior Hannah Smith spoke on this problem. “We were having a lot of turnovers. Every turnover we have is another opportunity for other team to score. If we have over twenty turnovers, that’s twenty opportunities for the other team.”

Coach Michael has incentivized the players to help address this problem. For every turnover over twenty, the team has to run down and back the court at the next practice. This began to pay off this past Thursday as the Cougars collected their first win against Broughton, with their smallest number of turnovers all season. Led by Savannah Coffel scoring fifteen points, the Cougars tallied forty-seven points total, the most they’ve scored all season.

The momentum continued into Friday where Apex beat Garner 54-49. The leading scorers were Savanna Coffel (twenty points) and Hayden Tarpey (eighteen points).

“Our team is finally clicking and we are doing a lot better at developing our skills and working together,” said senior power forward Paige Bracey, “We are finally starting to play up to our potential in games and it is really exciting”.

“It was a hard fought victory and I’m extremely proud of the way my teammates played. I hope we keep this momentum going forward into Christmas break.”

The Cougars’ next game is home Tuesday night against South Garner. Currently undefeated in conference play, the team is hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive with another conference win. Thursday they will face a tough Cary team away. They will also be playing in a Christmas break tournament at Lee County High School.
