Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald: Movie Review

Warning spoilers  Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was a fantastic sequel to Newt Scamander’s debut, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The Crimes of Grindelwald had a thrilling plot and lots of excitement up until the last second. We got to revisit all of our favorite characters and found out more about the couples we know and love. Also, we got to meet some new people and even visit the past of some of our favorite characters from the infamous Harry Potter series.

To recap, we learned more about Credence’s past and about who he truly is. There were lots of developments in Grindelwald’s plans. There were some sad deaths and a cliffhanger that left us on the edge of our seats in anticipation for the next movie. We got to see developments in Queenie and Jacob’s relationship and also in Newt and Tina’s relationship. We met some new creatures like the Zouwu and some adorable baby Nifflers.

There were many plot holes in Crimes of Grindelwald, most of which were discovered by Harry Potter fans and have to do with the Harry Potter universe. The biggest that I discovered was the death of Leta and how that relates to Bellatrix Lestrange, how McGonagall was somehow an adult when she hasn’t even been born, and how people could apparate within the Hogwarts grounds?

If Leta Lestrange actually died and she was the last person in the Lestrange lineage, then later on in the Harry Potter series how could Bellatrix marry into the Lestrange family? This plot hole could be fixed if we were to discover later on that Leta was not really dead, similar to Credence in the first movie.

One that really bothers me is that there is a young woman who was referred to as McGonagall, but in the Order of the Phoenix we found out that Minerva McGonagall was born in 1935. So if this film was set in 1927, how could we possibly see a fully grown McGonagall? This plot hole could be fixed by stating that maybe it was a relative to Minerva McGonagall not Minerva herself.

The last plot hole I found was when the Ministry comes to talk to Albus Dumbledore at Hogwarts, and they apparated into the classroom. This could not be, because JK Rowling stated in the Harry Potter books that no apparating could occur on Hogwarts grounds to ensure the safety of the students. This rule was broken a couple times in the Harry Potter books as well, so it has some fans questioning its authenticity.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie even though there were a couple things that did not make sense. I would definitely recommend seeing this movie, especially if you enjoyed the Harry Potter series.
