Bohemian Rhapsody Movie Review

Summary: Bohemian Rhapsody is a dramatized film about a well known band, Queen. It particularly follows the life of Freddie Mercury, who was the lead singer of the band.

Bohemian Rhapsody gives its viewers a great insight on the life of  Freddie Mercury. This movie was well crafted in its soundtrack, visuals, casting, costumes, and overall humor. This is no boring documentary. It is a live-action movie of the fabulous Mercury’s life, a life that, although sad in some ways, was never boring.

The film did well in many things, but accuracy is hard to put into a good or bad category. Showcasing one’s life is very hard to do with precise detail, but if you are going to recreate someone’s life, you must be as precise as possibly. In the creator’s defense they worked hard to entertain their viewers, and if that means changing the plot, they did it. Also most people these days would not actually know the real story, so it would not matter in the long run. The reasoning behind these changes was to add intensity and emotional effect. For example, the creators of film changed when the band Queen found out Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS. In real life it is not known exactly when he found out about his diagnoses, but Mercury definitely did not tell the band before their performance at Live Aid.

Along these changes, the creators tried to be accurate in their recreation of some of Queen’s performances and in the personality of some of the band members, and by casting the right actors and using videos of the band in previous years, they were able to capture these qualities. The reenactment of some of their performances, such as Live Aid, were so exact and detailed even the Pepsi cups placed on Mercury’s piano were in the exact same position. Details like these were not the only things that amazed viewers. Actors like Rami Malek blew critics away with their performance. Malek was not only able to recreate some of the most heart-wrenching periods of Mercury’s life but was able to recreate his personality in a way that made sense. By adding in Mercury’s style of humor, the creators of the film captured the true essence of Freddie Mercury and of Queen. After what seems like reincarnation occurred amongst the actors and actresses, the costume crew did an amazing job representing Queen’s style in clothes and in teeth.

This film is highly recommended and definitely worth watching, but be aware that Mercury went through and did some crazy things during his life, and this movie does not keep these elements hidden.

“I love the fact that I can make people happy, in any form. Even if it’s just an hour of their lives, if I can make them feel lucky or make them feel good, or bring a smile to a sour face, that to me is worthwhile.”- Freddie Mercury
