Should Video Games be Considered Art?

Since the early days of gaming and even still now there has always been a stigma around gaming. That it is meant for children and should not be taken seriously. Though video games are one of the best ways to experience media. I believe that it should be considered an art just like how movies are considered art. There is no concrete definition of art, but a common theme is the expression of human emotion created with skill. So why can video games be included as an art form? Not every game should be considered art, but many should be up there with movies, paintings, sculptures, and literature.

In the last 30 years of gaming, graphics have improved, music has become better and stories have evolved significantly to be more compelling. One of the earlier games of that nature in the 3D era is Final Fantasy 7. It was integral for using a character driven RPG story that stayed away from the common tropes of the genre. It is beloved for its themes of personal identity, environmentalism, and corporate greed. It still has a giant fan base almost 30 years later because of the relatability of the themes to this day.

Another game that is a huge pioneer for gaming is Silent Hill 2. It is a true developer of the psychological horror genre in gaming. The game follows James Sunderland in his descent of his mental state in a morphed town representing his own guilt and trauma. The designs of the monsters by Masahiro Ito add so much to, not only the environment, but the story as well. With the monsters representing James’ past in many different ways. I think stores like these work best in the media of gaming because you are the character and you are going through the same exact experiences.

The next game is a must when discussing video games as art, The Last of Us. Releasing in 2-13 around the same time as the big zombie franchise The Walking Dead was still going strong. On the surface The Last of Us is a zombie and stealth game, but in reality it is so much more. It uses the zombie apocalypse setting as a vehicle to tell a dramatic story about bonds and personal ethics. Without delving into too many spoilers, the story follows Joel as he helps transport Ellie to a clinic for research because she is immune to the virus. The story asks the player how much is too far to protect the people we love.

Lastly, I thought I should mention Persona 3/Persona 3 Reload. The original Persona 3 released in 2006 and marked a big jump in the series with somewhat of a different gameplay style and fully voiced dialog. This game tackles the most heavy themes of the series with it focusing around mortality and the importance of bonds. You follow a group of high schoolers tasked with stopping the end of the world and having to make extreme sacrifices in the process. This game made a huge impact on me, with it being one of the only games that have made me cry. I talked to Apex High School senior Lane Barbee on his thoughts about Persona 3, “Well I mean, Persona 3 I think should be considered art. Its visual presentation, music, writing and gameplay are beautifully done. The overall message and emotions it is able to deliver is something I’ve Rarely seen in media. Great game and definitely worth being called art.” With its blend of perfectly created story and characters mixed with its beautifully composed music making it an excellent example of the artistry of gaming.

Video games should be praised alongside other mediums of art. They make us feel as strong, or even stronger emotions than even other art forms. I think the fact that people discredit them is ridiculous and dismisses the complex portrayals of emotion they represent. Video games should be among all other forms of art and not cast aside, but truly appreciated by all.
