Club Spotlight: Students Against Destructive Decisions

Here at Apex High, students can stay after school and go to any of our clubs, which provide a great way to get involved, make new friends, or learn something new. Whether it’s about sports, art, or helping others, there’s something for everyone. One club that stands out here is Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), which is a group dedicated to helping students make positive choices and avoid risky behavior in general. Our school’s edition of Students Against Destructive Decisions is hosted by one of our fellow students, Eli Ooka, and the club is advised by one of our assistant principals, Mrs. Hill.

This club gets together roughly once per month and discusses current issues that should have awareness raised towards them. Some examples of things they have discussed, or things that will be discussed soon include:

  1. World Mental Health Day (Oct. 10th)
  2. Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (Jan. 9th)
  3. Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month (All of Feb.)

But that’s not even half of what this club does around the school. On November 25th, the SADD club went out during first and second lunch and performed seat belt checks on people driving off campus. That’s not all… They did this in collaboration with Chick Fil A, so if students were wearing their seatbelts while leaving, they would get gift cards for free food, like chicken sandwiches or milkshakes. I personally believe this was an incredible way to reward students that were driving well and practicing overall safety.

In the future, some examples of other events the SADD club is planning on conducting include Drunk Driving Prevention in April, Fentanyl Awareness Day on May 7th, and possibly another seat belt check like I mentioned earlier. As of right now, the next meeting is on January 24th, 2025, in the 3400 collab space. So if you are someone who may find yourself interested in joining the SADD club here at Apex High, reach out to Mrs. Hill or Eli and provide your email because before each event, an email is sent out with relevant information about the meeting.

Additionally, if you are a senior this year and you have gone to this club, you are eligible for cords. The main requirements are that you have created an account on the official SADD website (sadd.org/mysadd), and that you have been to most of the meetings, and participated in at least 6 events.

Overall, the Students Against Destructive Decisions club here at Apex High School is an enjoyable club that cannot only help you raise awareness towards important issues and causes, but also help you meet new people. Once again, if you are interested in going to SADD, feel free to reach out to Mrs. Hill at jhill1@wcpss.net or Eli Ooka at ceooka@wcpss.net and ask about the club.
