Clubs at AHS
By: Sirine de Rambures and Lily Sinodis
How many students at Apex High School participate in our clubs? We surveyed some of our students, and 77% of them participate in at least one of our 60+ clubs. AHS has many different options for clubs and extracurricular activities. We have some that you would expect, but many that may be a surprise.
Apex High School has a lot of variety when it comes to clubs. Some unique clubs include the Cougar Rocks club which brings in together music lovers, while the Cougars’ Kitchen lets AHS students improve their culinary skills. KPEX connects fans of K-pop where they listen to music, play games, and chat. The Metallic Banana Social Club is the perfect safe place to just meet new people, have fun, and do various activities and games. These are clubs you don’t see much at other high schools and it allows students to build a strong community.
Many clubs at AHS are also at other schools around the county. Many of these county-wide clubs have competitions or meetings across different schools. For example, DECA, FBLA, Science Olympiad, and The FFA Association take place at many different locations. The clubs compete at many different national or county-wide levels. These meetings and competitions allow students to test their knowledge or communicate with people interested in the same topics as them. This is a great way to collaborate with different students and to show the importance of some of these clubs.
Two more big categories of clubs at Apex High School are political clubs and medical clubs. Many clubs are more specific topics surrounding these, such as the Practical Medicine Club, Red Cross Club, Pink Ribbon Club, Disease Awareness Club, and HOSA. These are all great options if you’re interested in medical topics or going into a medical field. Some options for political clubs include Mock Trial Club, Political Club, Model United Nations, and Teen Democrats. Our students and staff that are interested in these topics are happy to welcome new members who may want to learn more, or have discussions with others interested in these subjects.
AHS’s extracurricular allows students to build their knowledge and creativity. The American Sign Language Club introduces students to sign language by instructing and teaching them the language. Drama Club provides an outlet for students to express themselves through many theater activities. For those interested in the German language and culture, there is a German Club and an award-winning German National Honor Society which support the study of Germany, while the Multilingual Learner’s Club builds a strong community to help the multilingual learners.
To find out more about these clubs, and many more make sure to check out this link. This spreadsheet will show a short description of the club, the days they meet, the student leader and faculty advisor, as well as where the meetings are held.
Another great way to participate is by making your own club! All you have to do is go on the school website and click the clubs and societies on the activities tab and look at the Google Doc which gives you a list of instructions that guides you on club creation. Another step you will also need is finding a faculty member as the advisor for your club..
Clubs are a very important part of high school as it helps students develop their leadership skills, build friendships and even strengthen their college applications. Colleges look for students who are involved in extracurricular activities outside your regular classes, as it shows passion and dedication. Whether you are joining clubs for your hobby or learning something completely new, joining one will provide you with a fun experience and the chance to make good memories.
