Women´s Flag Football

In November 2023, Wake County met to decide whether women’s flag football should officially become a sport. Women’s flag football consists of around nineteen schools in Wake County, along with Cardinal Gibbons. Wake County Schools play around 15 games, along with the championship, between mid-October and mid-December.

The Apex High School Women’s Flag Football team has 19 players, ranging from freshmen to seniors. The Lady Cougars are currently 11-4 with around four games left in the regular season. I had the opportunity to talk to some Lady Cougars about flag football and the 2024 season.

What football position do you play? Why do you enjoy playing that football position?

Running back; I like running” – Lucy Nelson (‘27)

“Running back or Wide Receiver; I find it fun to run with the ball” – Kora Frank (‘27)

“Defense; I like that position because defense is just more fun in between plays and the people are really fun to be around and in the games we just do a lot” – Mazzie Hagman (‘27)

“I play everywhere, but I started out at Defense then I went to Offense at a Wide Receiver and now I’m back to defense; I enjoy it because there is a lot you can do because of defense you can go anywhere and pull any flags and on offense, you can get the ball or you can not get the ball it is just really fun” – Allison Caudill (‘27)

What encouraged you to play flag football?

“It was really fun last year” – Lucy Nelson (‘27)

“I used to play leagues outside of school and the team last year was really fun” – Kora Frank (‘27)

“It just sounded fun and my friends are doing it so I wanted to do it with them” – Mazzie Hagman (‘27)

“I do competitive soccer as well so it was originally just to keep me in shape but then I started really enjoying it cause it was a fun thing to do on the side” – Allison Caudill (‘27)

What is your favorite thing about flag football?

“The practices are really fun” – Lucy Nelson (‘27)

“The team” – Kora Frank (‘27)

“The people” – Mazzie Hagman (‘27)

“I like pulling flags, it is so fun” – Allison Caudill (‘27)

What is the most difficult challenge for you this season?

“Getting over my concussion” – Lucy Nelson (‘27)

“I pulled my quad muscle, so I have been out all season and we have a new coach” – Kora Frank (‘27)

“Kora Frank (‘27) hurting her knee was massive and then Lucy Nelson (‘27) getting her concussion really affected my playing, but like playing Holly Springs and Apex Friendship was hard” – Mazzie Hagman (‘27)

“At the beginning of the season, I strained my hamstring so I had to come back from that” – Allison Caudill (‘27)

In conclusion, flag football can be enjoyable for any girl at Apex High School. If you haven’t attended a game yet, you should make the time to see why all the players love being part of the team. You can find the schedule by going to their Linktree or the Apex Athletic website.
