DIY Halloween Costumes

In 2024, nobody wants to drop $100 on a Halloween costume. So, why not get creative with it? Over the years, people have brought their imaginations to another level regarding Halloween. There is a variety of innovative options you can construct including decorations, costumes, and desserts. DIY Halloween costumes are an amazing way to showcase inventing and resourcefulness while celebrating one of the most beloved holidays of the year. Making your costume can be an enriching experience, allowing you to personalize your look and stand out from the crowd. Store-bought costumes can be generic or boring to some, and expensive for something you can easily make with better quality materials.

There is a variety of costumes you can choose from when it comes to making it yourself. You can do specific characters if you’re interested in certain TV shows or movies. Adam Sandler, Mr. Potato Head, and Willy Wonka are popular examples of the creativity people have included in their Halloween costumes these past years. Making your version of costumes allows you to tailor every detail to your liking. The key is to think outside the box and use your imagination to bring a vision to life.

Now let’s dive deeper into character costumes you can create. Starting with Adam Sandler, the ‘signature Sandler ‘fit typically involves an oversized red or blue T-shirt or polo shirt, a pair of baggy basketball shorts (any color, but mostly blue), and basketball shoes.

Mr. Potato Head is an adorable costume to create. Simple enough, you only need tan, black, pink, red, and blue fabric to create this costume. You could also create a hat to make it even more realistic as if you’re the potato while using the tan fabric.

Continuing, Willy Wonka is a pretty simple costume to replicate. As long as you have a red vest, black pants, black shoes, black hat, and big sunglasses, that would be a cheap costume to create! You can even act out his voice while going trick or treating. You could also go as the famous Violet. As long as everything you are wearing is purple, and have a purple face, you are now a plum! This would be an adorable duo costume.

As you can see in the links above, before creating a costume, you first need to brainstorm. Brainstorming ideas while gathering inspirational photos on Pinterest or Instagram is very helpful. Once you have a specific concept in mind, you will need a list of materials you will need during this process. Craft stores, supply closets, and even thrift stores are fantastic places to find affordable, and various supplies needed. Some specific stores that are great for Halloween shopping are;

Uptown Cheapskate – Apex NC

Angel Thrift – Fuquay NC

Goodwill – Apex, Holly Springs, Fuequay, Cary, and Raleigh NC

Micheals – Holly Springs, Cary, Garner, Apex NC

While assembling your costume, it’s great to have the ability to make adjustments and act on necessary alterations. You should be proud of your costume’s result.

Now, let’s spin back to Halloween costumes and how to make them. You can create a toga if you are searching for the absolute, easiest, last-minute costume. It would be the perfect costume to make. You find a white bed sheet and search for a YouTube video on how to wrap it around your waist, and there you have it. You are now a Roman for Halloween! Here are step-by-step instructions on how to create this look.

 There are plenty of options if you are trying to go for a more original look. For example, Mary Poppins! You will need basic, at-home supplies to make this character come to life. A red blouse, a long red skirt, and red, chunky heels are the only items you need to acquire. I recommend a black umbrella, a tiny purse, and a red hat for accessories! If this isn’t clear, we are bringing the Mary Poppins movie to life, I don’t know what could make this more obvious. This is adorable and affordable!

If you are looking for a couples costume or even a duo costume, a popular costume is the classic peanut butter and jelly. You can make this with cardboard boxes as the bread, and paint as the toppings. Now, if you’re in a trio or group of four or more, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Disney Princesses, or even M&M’s are adorable costumes you can make yourself! Here are links that solely represent these exact costumes. They go into detail on how to create them, and what materials you will need,
