The Successes of the Women’s Soccer Team
With less than two weeks left in conference, the women’s soccer team at Apex High School has performed exceptionally well. They have had fourteen wins, two losses and one tie in total so far this season and are currently first in conference. In the past few weeks, they have won five games in a row, bringing their state ranking to #7 in North Carolina and #51 in the nation.
One of the previous events that took place last week was the Kick for Cure game where the Cat Soccer team played against Apex Friendship in a hard fought battle. This game was a very special game as we honored one player’s younger sister and her hard-fought battle against cancer. There were raffles, contests, and donations that took place during half time of the game, where all proceeds were put towards the cancer society. The game went into overtime after a score of 0-0, and Apex was able to pull off a well deserved win after a great goal by Madison McClamrock. This was the second time the women’s soccer team had played and beat their rivalry team.
One of the players on the team, Lindsey McKinney, a midfielder, shares her experiences and memories so far of the Cat soccer team and her hopes for the future: “I’m really enjoying the season so far, and I think the team is doing amazing, and we are all working really well together. I think we are all really optimistic about the playoffs, and we are really wanting to get to the state championship and pull off a win. My favorite memory so far this season is beating Friendship twice because that’s just iconic, and it feels nice to beat our rival school both times.”
This week, their only game was on May 1, 2024, at 6:30, at Apex, where they played the Green Hope Falcons. The final score was 2-0, another win for your Apex Cougars! Next week, however, will be the last week of conference with two away games at Holly Springs on Monday and Middle Creek on Tuesday. After conference ends, the Cougars will officially start preparing for the first round of playoff games. They came very close last season when they made it to the third round of the playoffs. Sadly, they lost to Hoggard 4-3 in a very close game. However, with their impressive record and results so far this season; hopefully they can pull out multiple wins and go on to win the State Championship. Make sure to come out and support your lady Cougars!
