Black History Month Celebrations at Apex High School

Every year, Apex High School hosts a variety of events in celebration of Black History Month, and this year is no exception. There have been events throughout February, including a HBCU Fair held on February 2nd and weekly segments on CougarTV featuring our Black Student Union. Spirit days with specific themes have also been held each Thursday with themes such as “Black Out” and “Neon Day”.

The Black Student Union (BSU) will hold their most highly-anticipated event, the annual Black History Month Block Party, this Friday, February 23rd during both lunches in the courtyard. There will be booths and activities presenting information on the Black community’s contributions to food, music, fashion and other topics. Students can enjoy trivia and games related to Black history and culture. There will also be a section for students to do sidewalk chalk and jump rope.

Remember to wear this year’s Black History Month screen-printed tee to the block party. To get your shirt, simply bring a plain T-shirt to Ms. Purtee’s classroom and ask for it to be screen-printed.

When asked about the importance of Black History Month in the modern day, BSU president Alli Howard explained, “Our history is not just slavery and segregation. It is Black art, academia, cinema, etc. It is absolutely necessary to celebrate Black History Month not only to acknowledge and educate ourselves on Black history but to celebrate the continuing excellence and exponential growth of Black culture and contributions.”

She adds that “Black History Month is the one time a year that we get to tell our story—and have most people listen. It’s the one time a year where we get the spotlight in a world where we are a minority.”

Often, there is much more to Black history and culture than what is taught in school, and it is important to learn more about these topics in order to be a responsible citizen.

Alli Howard concurs. “I also love learning new things about my history; there’s always so much more to learn about. I love taking the time to pay homage to my ancestors and community who have fought so I can have what I have today.”

Black History Month is a time for remembrance and also one for joy. When asked about her favorite part of Black History Month, Alli said: “My favorite part of Black History Month is the change in atmosphere. I feel like during Black History Month—even though it’s the shortest month of the year—there’s an entire energy shift in the community.”

Though Black History Month takes place during the shortest month of the year, the impact it has is immeasurable. Remember to come out to the Block Party on Friday, February 23rd!
