Spring Sports Tryouts
With winter coming to a close, spring sports tryouts are coming soon! Tryouts are on February 14-16, and there are a lot of options for sports that you could try out for both men, women, coed, JV, and varsity Teams!
There’s so many options for men’s sports you can tryout for. Some men’s sports you can try out for are JV and varsity baseball. The coach for Varsity baseball is Coach Olive, and their team went 13-8 last season. Another men’s sport you can try out for this spring is the men’s varsity tennis team who is coached by Coaches Simon and Yale. They went on to win many matches last year. You can also try out for men’s varsity golf who practices and has matches at Macgregor and Knights Play golf courses. You can also try out for JV and varsity men’s lacrosse whose varsity head coach is Coach Pryor. Lastly you can try out for men’s varsity track and field, in a variety of events such as sprint, long and middle distance, shot put, pole vaulting and more. The head coach is Coach Cooper as well as many other assistant coaches.
There are also many sports for the women as well! There is also a women’s varsity track and field team, who combines practices with the mens team. They are also coached by Coach Cooper. One athlete who participated in Varsity Spring Track and Field last year said, “I really love participating in meets and pushing myself with my friends to get better”, said by Natalia Roda, a sophomore this year. Next there is varsity and JV softball, who went 22-8 for the 2023 season as well as winning the 4A state championship that year! You can also try out for the stunt team, which is for girls as well as boys. Women’s soccer is also in the spring, which differs from men’s soccer. They have both a varsity and JV team and are coached by Coach MacWilliams. For their 2023 season they went 17-5-2 and were 3rd in their conference. A goalie on the JV team who played on the team last year said, “I really loved the team dynamic, and everyone was very supportive!”, said by Sarah Fagerstorm, a sophomore. Lastly you can try out for the women’s lacrosse team! Their head coach is Coach Rutledge, and they have both a JV and varsity team. I personally played for the team last year and loved the dynamic as well as the attitude of the team!
If you want to join any of these teams, you first have to make sure you are all cleared in Dragonfly by completing all the forms. This will take some time. You also must click the sport you want to play in Dragonfly and make sure it gets approved by Mr. Kliewer. I would also suggest talking to the coach of the sport you wish to play, just to get in the loop. If you are approved in Dragonfly, you can also participate in the workouts that many of the teams are having right now. If you participate in a winter or fall sport, you should be pretty much filled out with Dragonfly, but you still need to double check, especially if you have your physical, and you clicked the sport you want to play. Tryouts are on February 14-16th for all these sports. Most games start soon after, with game schedules on MaxPreps, or your coach will have them. Funding for all these sports is managed by the Cougar Club and Apex athletics department, and if you wish to buy tickets for any of these sports games, you can find them on GoFan by searching the name of the sport or buying an all inclusive pass for all sports and all home games.
Good luck with tryouts, Cougars!
