Leap Year

Some may consider February 29th to be an “unlucky day” or a fever dream, and this year you will get to experience that feeling that comes along with that special day! The year 2024 will be the first time since the odd and unfortunate year of 2020. This fact does have a lot of people on the internet worried, but I think everyone should look at it as an extra day to reach goals and to live to the fullest.

Why do we have a leap year? Well the non-statistical answer would be because the Earth’s orbit does not complete a full rotation around the sun within a whole amount of days, so we have to add in an extra day every four years to balance the rotation. The good thing about having a leap year is that the seasons are said to almost perfectly match up with the given calendar seasons. For people born on the leap day of the 29th, they have to legally wait until the day of March 1st to gain milestone privileges.  Some people do prefer a leap year because holidays such as Halloween, Independence Day, Christmas, and New Years, are all on Fridays or Saturdays, which means they do not interfere with normal weekday activities.

Some leap year traditions consist of women proposing to their boyfriends, but there are also countries who believe that rejecting the proposal is a huge curse. There are many more such as drinking the cocktail made for the day itself, going whale watching because they seem to come out of the water more and celebrating all born on the 29th.

In conclusion, the leap year brings happiness and nerves to lots of people around the world for reasons such as religion or personal preference. But in my opinion, everyone should take advantage of another day living on this beautiful planet.
