Senioritis At Apex

Senioritis is a colloquial term used to describe a phenomenon that often occurs among high school seniors, particularly in the latter part of their senior year. It refers to a decline in motivation and academic performance as students approach the end of their high school journey. Things like college acceptance, burnout, and anticipating the next phase of their lives, whether it be college, work, or other pursuits, make it difficult for seniors to want to go to school. I asked Apex High seniors if they felt the impacts of senioritis and how it has had both positive and negative effects on them. Here’s what they said:

When asked about if they have senioritis, Apex High School senior KT Murray said: “Yes, I feel like I’ve had it since junior year; I have lost motivation to do assignments because I know I’m graduating soon.” Another student said, “A little bit, it is really draining and makes me not want to show up to school.”

The anticipation of leaving home, meeting new people, and starting a new chapter in life can be both exciting and overwhelming. When asked about any stress they may feel after graduating, Apex senior Mia Bonola-Pimentel says: “I’m honestly not stressed about graduating, I am excited because I think it’s going to be good not having school take up all my time, and I will be able to move on into the next part of my life.” On the other hand, another student said: “I am overwhelmed with a lot, focusing on graduating and then also being excited and ready for the next chapter to start.”

While senioritis is a common experience, enjoying the last parts of senior year without stress is important for making lasting memories and transitioning smoothly to the next phase of life. After asking senior Zeinab Fadl if she felt like she was making the most of her senior year, she said: “I would definitely say I am trying to make it the best it can be! I plan activities with my friends so I can remember the last moments of high school. It’s hard not to stress, but it’s also about just going with the flow.” When KT was asked this question, she said: “I think so. I went to all of the football home games and homecoming dance; however, I do wish there were more events through the school for seniors!”

Enjoying the present is important, but also taking some time to prepare for the transitions ahead is essential. Remember, it’s okay to take breaks, enjoy the moment, and savor the friendships and experiences of your senior year. Balancing responsibilities with self-care and enjoyable activities will contribute to a more fulfilling and memorable final year of high school.

Good luck, Apex High School seniors; you are almost there!
