Girls Flag Football
This year many schools in Wake County are making a girls’ flag football team. A partnership with USA Football and the Carolina Panthers has made this possible by supplying equipment, uniforms, etc. This event still needs to be approved by Wake County to become a future sport, but so far, things are looking good. Here is some information about it.
This offer was a grant given by the Carolina Panthers and USA Football; they offered a sum of money to split between schools to cover the costs of painting the fields, uniforms, flags, belts, practice equipment, etc. The only things players need to provide are cleats and a mouthguard. There are nineteen schools in Wake County as well as Cardinal Gibbons who signed up and have started to form a plan.
Although it’s still up in the air, the date set for the season to start is January 8th through February 10th. The meeting date for Wake County to decide whether to approve the sport or not is November 21st. This means that many of the details that are yet to be set will be finalized. On that note, there is not a coach(es) as of right now, but there are a few teachers interested in coaching.
Since this is the first year this sport is happening, the season is pushed back a little further than it’s planned to be in the future. The idea is that it will be a mid-season sporting event between mid-October to mid-December around this time next year. Hopefully, the North Carolina High School Association approves doing this for multiple years because many counties have started to or have been doing it, which gives them a reason to keep it going.
Nothing is set yet, but practices are planned to be two to three days a week other than tryout week which will probably be the entire week of practice. There’s a QR code on a flyer for an interest meeting during both lunches on Thursday the 16th; if you were not able to attend, you can reach out to Coach Weidenburner with any questions.
Games are set to be played on January 27th, February 3rd, in February 10th. All of them are planned to be on Saturdays. On January 27th, a group of four schools will play three games against each other that day. On February 3rd there will be a double elimination tournament with all schools participating; Apex High will only be playing half the schools that day. The last game is supposed to be a huge event with the media and newspapers there. A location is still being determined, but Athens Drive High School is looking like a potential spot.
There are only a few requirements needed to be a part of this team. Grade-wise, you must be passing 70% of your classes from the previous semester, at least a 1.5 GPA, and no more than 13 & 1/2 absences. You must fill out your information on the Dragonfly app, have your updated medical papers and physical, and be cleared by Coach Weidenburner with grades and attendance.
Be on the lookout for Women’s Flag Football in an upcoming CougarTV episode. If you are in any way interested, you should try it out. There are no requirements; all you have to do is be able to run and maybe even throw or catch a ball. You have a great opportunity to be a part of something huge.
