2023 Homecoming Recap
Homecoming. Everyone who’s been in highschool knows how much homecoming week matters to students all over the country. For seniors homecoming marks a bittersweet experience filled with “last” moments: the “last” homecoming game, the “last” dance, the “last” chance to vote for court, and the “last” homecoming prep rally. For underclassmen, homecoming is a chance to partake in traditional American high school events that they might not otherwise go to. It’s a chance to connect with other students.
To start off an epic homecoming week, students at Apex participate in Spirit week. While many students choose not to participate in the chosen themes, those who do, often go all out. Students wear full costumes, bring props, and even use paint to color their hair or add fun face details. Each day is a new theme and this year the themes were Jersey Day, Monochromatic Day, Character Day, and finally Spirit Day to get the students pumped up for the homecoming game. This year our homecoming game was on Friday, September 29th, against Green Level High school. With an insane amount of students and family members coming to support the team, there wasn’t even enough room for students in the stands, making for an outstandingly hype crowd, with the help of Cougar Crazies and the Apex High band, of course. During halftime, everyone was anticipating the crowning of homecoming queen and king, cheering as loud as ever, as the court was introduced and escorted by various loved ones. In the end, we were all so proud of Hali Diallo and Maxton Brohm for winning queen and king. After halftime, and everyone took their turns congratulating Hali and Maxton, the team went right back to destroying Green Level, with the final score being 42-14, the exact same score we got against Friendship last year. After the game, a few crowds stayed for the Apex High Band’s performance that they will compete in during the band competition. All of the band was unable to attend the dance for the competition, so they made their very own Apex Band Hoco dance. While band members were upset to be missing the dance, they were excited to compete with their team and were still able to attend the game.
To get a better idea of what the student body at apex thought of homecoming week, I asked a few questions to the students. Here are their thoughts:
Hali, a senior and the homecoming queen, felt “super lit” after winning the crowd, and was “not expecting to win, as all the girls on the homecoming court are super awesome.” She said that she will “definitely be going to the dance” and “will be in the mosh pit, breaking it down.”
Sophia Tate, a senior and on the varsity cheer team, says her favorite part was the “pep rally.”
Doc, a senior, says his favorite part was the “school passion (at the game), it warmed his heart and made him feel so alive.” He looks forward to the dance most, but thinks that the game is a “great warm up.”
Addie Fornes, a senior and the student body president, says her favorite part was “seeing Maxton and Hali’s faces when they won homecoming king and queen.” She is also proud of how well the prep rally went, having it been the “first prep rally in the gym in a long time.”
Brady Rose, the junior president, says his favorite part was “crowning Maxton king.”
Maxton Bohm, the homecoming king, says that winning king is “awesome and a great feeling” and seeing the “football team absolutely demolish Green Level” was his favorite part.
Without a doubt, this has been one of the best homecoming weeks Apex High has experienced. With an amazing win against Green Level, a spirit week, a successful prep rally, and an incredible dance, we finished the homecoming week with a bang.
