The Apex Varsity Volleyball Team
The 2023-2024 season has been a remarkable one for the varsity volleyball team in terms of personal and on-court successes. With a ten to five win ratio as of writing this article, they have shown outstanding sportsmanship and character throughout the entire season, and their demonstration of discipline on the court is fascinating to watch.
In my interview with the team, I got a glimpse into how tight-knit they all are and how they’re all “one big friend group,” according to Carys Kerr. Adler Covington states that “[team members] get very close to each other throughout the season since they spend so much time together… it’s easy to be friends both on and off the court”. Having such a close bond is essential for developing trust on the court as well. That is evident in how the team plays. They mentioned how they celebrate their victories with each other and reminisce on memorable moments throughout the season.
Coach Webster says that “Apex is notoriously a tough out– someone that is really tough to get rid of– because we just continue to fight.” That could be attributed to the team’s strength and continuous determination as well as an excellent work ethic, which translates to their school responsibilities as well. Bella Lineberger notes how “[they] find ways to work before JVA and JVB games”. That kind of time management is important when playing a sport like volleyball at such a high level, and the varsity team seems to have it down to a science. It is, in part, due to Coach Webster’s guidance and his belief that “sports in high school are an educational experience… teaching them lessons they can learn about life.” It is thanks to this philosophy that the team has excelled as much as they have, and will only continue to for the rest of the season.
Although the varsity volleyball team has five games left before the end of the season, their progress and determination is admirable and will undoubtedly stay strong until the end. If you enjoy watching volleyball, go out and support the varsity team at their games whenever possible!
