Canvas Switch Up
Apex High has had a lot of changes in 2023. There are new lunch pass rules, new classes, and new teachers. However, a noticeable change that affects every student and teacher at Apex is the switch to Canvas from Google Classroom.
Most people grew up using Google Classroom in elementary and middle school. While some people used Canvas as an alternative, most teachers used Google Classroom to host an online classroom. There seems to be a major bias between students on which is preferred. Many students find it to be confusing, unorganized, and difficult to turn in work. Sophia Taylor, a senior, says,” It’s so difficult to see where everything is, and each teacher uses it differently.” On the student side, the lack of consistency seems to be very frustrating. On the flip side Google Classroom had the same set up no matter the class. This made it easier for students to know where their work was and not worry about missing anything.
Teachers are also finding the switch very difficult. Some teachers enjoy the customization features while others find it way too complicated. “It’s the bane of my existence!” says Mr. Oltmans. He seems to be sharing the majority opinion of many other teachers at Apex. Most teachers were much more comfortable using Google Classroom compared to Canvas. The biggest complaint is the different student and teacher classroom views. This makes the teachers’ view on Canvas drastically different from students, which prevents or makes it more difficult for teachers to make sure their students receive the proper materials needed to complete their assignments. The disconnect between the teacher and student view causes conflict in the classroom and confusion.
The switch to Canvas has been a very unpopular decision. Both students and teachers have been displeased with the results. Hopefully, over time, Apex will adjust to the new changes, or Wake County will decide to make the switch back.
