Barbie 2023

Barbie. We all know and love Barbie, and have most likely played with her in our childhoods. Barbie has been around for over sixty years, and she has held over two hundred careers. I remember being so excited when the Barbie movie was first announced in early 2022. The promotion for this movie before its release in July of this year was incredible:. Barbie billboards, songs from the soundtrack going viral, commercials, and different food chains having “Barbie” meals!

The movie starts with Barbie, portrayed by Margot Robbie, and her daily life living in Barbie land. In Barbieland, the women run everything. Since Barbie has over two hundred careers, why wouldn’t they? Barbie and Ken then take on the “real world” and learn of the different challenges and thrills of humanity. The movie is filled with emotion, patriarchal and psychological references, and laughs. So why is this movie significant, and what does it say about our world?

This movie captures the idea of womanhood and what the different expectations are for women of all ages in today’s society. It also touches on struggling with who you are and your emotions and how they can affect your certain life choices and relationships. So, did the movie live up to everyone’s high expectations?

The movie was rated an overall four out of five stars on Letterboxd, with ratings from over two million people. Lots of people loved how it truly captured and projected what it’s like to be a human, as well as a woman in this world. Others thought it was a little too pushy and political for a movie about a doll. Overall the cinematography, the humor, and the amazing acting that was delivered, the movie enjoyable for the majority of people. Lastly, let’s find out what the students here at Apex think.
