Welcoming Mr. Broadway
Mr. Broadway, an Apex High alumnus, has returned to campus after four years as one of our new Special Education teachers! I was given the opportunity to interview him and ask him a couple of questions regarding his experiences at Apex High School and his time before returning.
Mr. Broadway earned his degree in special education and is now pursuing a masters in school counseling from N.C. State. He mentions that one of the classes he took here at Apex helped guide him toward what he wanted to do in the future.
Why did you become a teacher?
“I had worked with kids all my life, and when I was a senior in high school, I did Student Leadership. It really solidified that I wanted to work with high schoolers. That’s what made me want to choose special education. Teaching is fun, I like being around students and seeing how they live.”
What other jobs have you had?
“From age sixteen to twenty-two, I worked at the YMCA, and from twenty-one to twenty-three I worked at a summer camp in New York. I also worked at Lululemon briefly as well as my apartment complex, so a lot.”
Who have been inspirations to you?
“Ms. McGee, Ms. Hoskins, and a plethora of other teachers. They really did help me a lot throughout high school, and I enjoy seeing how their stories are similar to mine, like how Ms. McGee had gone to N.C. State, and I am going to N.C. State now. Ms. McGee helped especially through high school and college, telling me about the job I’m in now and encouraging me to apply.”
What are your thoughts on Apex so far as a teacher? Is it different from when you were a student?
“I graduated In 2018, the year after they tore down the old Apex building. It’s a lot different here now than from when I was a student. I like it more for the students here now, but if it was like this when I was a student, I feel like a lot of people would have tried to take advantage of it; we were a lot wilder. I enjoy seeing the upgrades and everything because it really does benefit the students, and you guys have a much more welcoming and interactive school now.”
Welcome back, Mr. Broadway!
