I have always been interested in journalism, especially print journalism. When I learned about Legacy during my freshman year, I was ecstatic. I eagerly took the Introduction to Communications and Mass Media course, which was the prerequisite for Newspaper at the time; it was probably my favorite class freshman year. When Covid hit in 2020, I was upset that I could not finish the communications class in person, but I was also worried it would impact my ability to take Newspaper. Fortunately, it was still offered during online learning, and I got to take Newspaper during the spring semester of my sophomore year.
While taking Newspaper online was not ideal, I was still excited to write articles and be a part of the class. Junior year, I was eager to take Newspaper again; this time, I was finally in person. Taking Newspaper in person was so much more fun. I made new friends, including one of my best friends, Rose, with whom I co-wrote every article we could together. I also learned a lot more, not only about the news writing process but about grammar and writing to keep other people’s attention, not just for myself. I was able to write many different kinds of articles and interview so many different people. Not only did I get to learn more about news writing, but I also got to learn more about school events and activities that I otherwise would not have known about.
Every day for the last two and a half years, I have looked forward to going to Newspaper. It has been my constant throughout most of high school, and the people in it have supported me and have become some of my closest friends. I am going to miss our inside jokes and our daily lunch trips, but I am also excited for all of the new people joining the Legacy staff who will get to learn what I have and have fun while doing it.
I have had the most amazing experience in Newspaper these past two and a half years, and I am going to miss all of the people who have made being a part of Legacy so fun. I hope with the thirty nine articles that I have written, I have left my own legacy here at Apex, even if it is a small one. I can think of no better way to have gotten involved with the school community than to have been a part of the school newspaper.
